Following the Breckenridge Buckaroos 2025 media day, the Bucks football team fit in some friendly competition with their annual watermelon scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 9.
The intrasquad scrimmage gives players, coaches and fans the opportunity to see where the team is at before going into the regular scrimmage schedule and then ultimately the regular season.
Every player on both the varsity and junior varsity squads had an opportunity to get some snaps in the scrimmage, with the coaching staff coaching up players on the field throughout the action.
“I thought we had good energy. The end of the week – day six – is always a grind, but they all showed up, they all got reps, they all competed,” Head Coach Casey Pearce said. “I was proud of where we’re at, at the end of the week… Everybody in the world is going to say, week one, we’ve got to have better execution. It’s all cliche-like, but it’s the truth. It’s never going to be good enough, and that’s what our attitude needs to be. We’ve always got room for improvement.”
One of the bigger things that the Bucks have to work on is running the football more consistently, which the inexperience up front has a factor in.
“Inexperience up front is going to take precedence, so that we get it fixed. We have seven offensive linemen, so it’s not like anybody is getting fired,” Pearce said. “We’ve just got to improve, keep working on it… Let’s get good at a few things and let’s hone in on what we do really [well] and let’s utilize it, make it something we can do all the time.”
The Bucks are currently rolling with a three-quarterback room of Joseph Juneau, Hudson Woodward and Cooper Wimberly, with Coach Pearce opting not to name an official starter as of yet.
Each of the quarterbacks had a chance to show off their arms in the scrimmage as well as their abilities to use their legs and run option plays.
One important player was missing from the scrimmage, as Christian Flores stood on the sidelines with a cast on his right foot and crutches. Flores hurt his foot right towards the end of offseason workouts and will require surgery that has about a six-week recovery time.
With that recovery time, Coach Pearce and the Bucks hope to have him back in time for district play, which begins Friday, Oct. 10 at Clyde. The six weeks lead right into the Bucks’ open week between non-district and district.
The Bucks will play their first official scrimmage against another team tomorrow, Thursday, Aug. 14 against Castleberry and Gainesville in Fort Worth.
